Water Dream Meanings

(1) Water may symbolize emotion or psychic energy.

It is therefore important to notice whether the water is free-flowing or stagnant (or frozen: see Ice), clean or foul.

(2) Water is a common symbol of fertility, growth, creative potential (especially if it takes the form of a reservoir or still lake), new life, or healing.

(3) It is also a symbol of the unconscious, especially if it is deep.

(4) It is a feminine symbol, representing either your own femininity (whether you are male or female), or your mother.

It is therefore important to note your reaction to the water in your dream. Are you afraid of water in real life? This may mean you are afraid of women (if you are a man), of your mother, or of your unconscious.

Example: ‘I am in deep water, no evidence that it is the sea. I am wearing my heavy brown coat. I have no fear, no feeling of cold and I pleasantly just sink’ (Mrs B). Mrs B is in her 80s, and is preparing for death in her dreams.

The water in her dream has the feeling of being womblike, suggesting that she senses death as a return to a womblike feeling state, with possible rebirth.

Example: ‘I was then standing in front of a senes of glass water tanks. I had apparently written an article about the balance between intellect and emotion, which had presented emotion in a way to show its equal value with intellect.

The tanks had water flowing through them with a series of valves. This demonstrated the different relationships between intel­lect and emotion. Some tanks were beautifully clear and col­ourful, showing the right balance.

The unbalanced ones had weed growing in them. I was then in a lift with a young woman. We moved close together and kissed. This moved my feelings so much I felt a great melting feeling in my abdomen, and a lot of body sensation against her body’ (Anthony F). Anthony’s dream perfectly illustrates how water refers to the emotions and flowing body feelings.

Example: ‘I was in a hospital ward—maybe for children. I was there to help them. In the ward was a large oblong tank full of water. I got into the water. I realised all the sick people in the ward bathed in the water—not soap, just immersion. This produced feelings of revulsion. I felt I would take into myself their sickness. I also thought that if I drank the water it would show the patients a positive attitude towards their sick­ness. They would no longer be afraid, and this would be a factor in their healing’ (Anthony F). Another of Anthony’s dreams in which he is looking at how to meet anxious feelings about his health. He sees that a more positive conscious atti­tude heals the childhood fears.

Entering water: entering into strong feelings such as might arise in a relationship or new job, sexual relationship, emo­tions which might stand in one’s way—as a deep lake might, or turgid water. Deep water: the deeps of one’s inner life. Hot water: strong emotions—see example in Introduction. Elec­tricity and water: emotions which can generate very powerful reaction to a situation, such as jealousy or anger. Idioms: make water, muddy the waters; tread water, water something down; turn on the waterworks; water under the bridge; hold water, in hot water, head above water; pour cold water onto something.

The larger the body of water, the more feelings the dream is expressing.

If the water is potentially overwhelming or dangerous, as in a tidal wave or waterfall, then the sense of danger must be added to your interpretation, as we are often afraid of feelings when they are greater than we think we can handle. Feelings flow and so does water, so the quality of movement of the water in your dream is pointing out the way in which you are experiencing your emotions.

A slow creek is like a small amount of emotional flow that is significant but sustaining and calming.

A raging river is more like the force of feelings that are much more intense and, if not navigated well, can be dangerous to your sense of well-being. Rain is the most like tears, and weather patterns in dreams that involve water may be pointing out the way you are experiencing or avoiding the easy flow of emotions associated with some current life experience.

If the dreamer is drinking water, this is a symbol for enjoying life.

If the dreamer is at presently in bad circumstances, dreaming of drinking water implies that good times are ahead.

Clear, calm water portends happiness, while river rapids or crashing surf implies rough times on the horizon.

It is a rather mysterious substance, given that it has the ability to flow through, over and round objects. It has the quality of being able to wear away anything that gets in its way. It can symbolize spiritual rebirth. In baptism, water is a cleanser of previously held ‘sins’, often also those inherited from the family. A lake, like a pool, can signify a stage of transition between the conscious and the spiritual self. When come upon unexpectedly it can give us the opportunity to appreciate and understand ourselves.

To be reflected in a pool indicates we need to come to terms with the shadow. We must learn to accept that there will be a part of ourselves that we do not like very much but, when harnessed, it can give much energy for change. Overflows and overflowing can signify an excess of energy, often emotion that is too much to be contained. Rivers or streams always represent our lives and the way that we live them. It will depend on our attitude as to whether we see our life as a large river or a small stream.

If the river is rushing by we may feel that life is moving too quickly for us.

If we can see the sea as well as the river, we may be aware that a great change needs to occur or that attention must be paid to the unconscious within. Crossing a river indicates great changes.

If the river is very deep we should perhaps be paying attention to the way we relate to the rest of the world.

If the river is frightening we are perhaps creating an unnecessary difficulty for ourselves.

If the water in the river appears to be contaminated we are not doing the best we can for ourselves. Seas or oceans very often represent cosmic consciousness – that is, the original chaotic state from which all life emerges. Inherent in that state is all knowledge – i.E. Completeness – although that may be obscured by our fear of deep emotion; we do not fear that which we understand.

A shallow sea suggests superficial emotion.

The waves in the sea represent strong emotion and passion.

A calm sea suggests a peaceful existence, while a stormy one signifies passion, either negative or positive.

To be conscious of the rise and fall of the tides is to be conscious both of the passage of time and of the rise and fall of our own emotions. Waterfalls symbolize any emotion that reaches the stage where it must ‘spill over’ in order to become manageable.

To be on the water (as in a boat) can represent indecision or a lack of emotional commitment, while to be in the water but not moving can suggest inertia. Going down into water indicates a need to renew one’s strength, to go back to the beginning, while coming up out of the water suggests a fresh start.

Dreaming Lens: What was the body of water? How large, small, manageable, or fearsome was it? Were you in the water, or did you consider jumping into it? Were you wet or in danger/fear of becoming so? Were you drinking it? Was the water natural or contained in man-made constructions, from cups to pipes or even aqueducts? Was the water related to the weather?

Personal Focus: Water is symbolic of the emotions. On a biological level, this is so because of the connection between emotional expression and tears. The human body is primarily made up of water held together by protein-based structures. When we cry, we lose some of that water in a stream emanating from the eyes. While we do not really understand why we cry, we do so when we are deeply moved. This mysterious leakage of precious water is akin to the feelings of loss that accompany it.

If all water is viewed as a symbolic representation of emotions, both conscious and unconscious, it is the structure that the water takes in your dreams that will inform you of the size and scope of the expression being illuminated by your dream.

As a general rule, weather-related water connects to conscious emotional expression and flow, whereas bodies of water contain some element of that which is unconscious. Rain and storms occur in the atmosphere and often over land, which represents the emotional content of the conscious mind. When large portions of water are only partially visible, that which is below the surface and unseen is symbolic of the powerful, hidden emotions of the unconscious mind. When water is contained in any way, the dreamer’s impulse to control some element of their emotional nature is being expressed.

Violent movement of water, such as rapids, waves, riptides, and storms represent the overwhelming power of emotional material. Your response to such images in a dream is indicative of your level of fear and resistance or lack of it. Lying near water may reflect being close to a willingness to explore the emotional territory outlined by the dream.

Being thirsty and/or drinking water could indicate a strong need to take more emotional sustenance into your life. Drowning might indicate an overwhelming amount of unmanageable emotions or the fear that any emotional outpouring might result in suffocation. A waterfall represents the way feelings can cascade down upon us suddenly and with great force: both sensual and exhilarating or painful and overwhelming. Using water to clean (from laundry to grooming) could mean the need for an emotional healing through working directly with your emotional issues.

A large body of water like a sea or a lake is often a symbol for the unconscious. Because sex involves fluids, Freud viewed water in dreams as a sexual symbol.

If the water is clear, it means luck at work and in your private life.

If the water is muddy: don’t get involved in a questionable transaction—you are fishing in murky waters. Drinking freshwater: you are very healthy and will reach a ripe old age.

If the water is unsettled: expect the next few days to be likewise. Seeing your image reflected in the water: you are only fooling yourself. In a woman’s dream, luxuriating in water is a sign of a healthy attitude toward sex and an overall positive disposition.

If a poor person sees himself carrying a container of water in a dream, it means money.

If a rich person sees that dream, it means marriage, or conceiving a child. Carrying water in a purse, socks, a cloth, or in any porous material in a dream means pride about one’s wealth, status, attainments, fame and living conditions. Pouring water into a container in a dream means getting married. Bathing in cold water in a dream means repenting from sin, recovering from an illness, release from prison, payment of one’s debts, or dispelling one’s fears. Drawing water from a well in a dream means earning money through deception and fraud. Channeling irrigations to water a garden or a farm in a dream means earning money from a woman.

If the trees of one’s garden or farm do blossom in the dream, it means conceiving a child from such a woman. Watering a garden or a farm in a dream also means having sexual intercourse with one’s wife. Water is the place where the souls of the dead meet the spirits of the water; it is a place of repression, of secrets with unknown depths and an element of rapture. It can tear us away and sweep us off, and it can be very frightening. Water is the symbol of what is changeable. Diving into the water means to seek wisdom. Whoever looks into the water always sees the Self.

Water symbolizes women, the process of birth and pregnancy. Running water means experiencing sexuality in a positive sense. Standing water means losing vitality and your very center. Or it might mean, as in Pond and the fountain of youth, that water is the carrier of life’s energies and rejuvenation. Out of this understanding might have come the ritual of baptism.

Falling into the water means being swept away by emotion; hut this may also he a warning dream, pointing also to Diving and Drowning.

According to the Chinese understanding of nature, water is a symbol of the elemental, female force of yin.

For the Taoist, water is the essence of life, its movement an example for a life lived in harmony with nature.

The holy water in the Catholic Church and the water used for baptism represent the healing powers of water.

According to Freud, a water dream is often the memory of our life in our mother’s womb. And again, according to Freud, to come out of water represents the image of birth. Water for him was always connected to birth.

A waterfall in your dream forecasts a happy rise in social status. Turbulent, choppy waters, in which a dreamer fears being swamped or drowning, symbolizes that you are being overwhelmed emotionally. Tidal waves may symbolize specific threats that loom in the distance. Being caught in a swift moving current suggests being swept up in your emotions. Cloudy water suggests lack of emotional clarity. If you dream that you are able to breathe underwater, you are open to unconscious feelings and psychic awarenesses.

If you dream of having the power to control water, this symbolizes your spiritual and intellectual growth. You are not using your full potential - you have considerable energy and mental abilities, and you need to start using them to put your thoughts into action. Controlling water in a dream may also indicate a need to control your temper better.

To dream of walking on water means that you have supreme control over your emotions. It may suggest that you should keep your emotions contained, so they don’t explode. This dream can also symbolize faith in yourself.

If the water is muddy, you will be in danger and gloom will occupy Pleasure’s seat.

If you see it rise up in your house, denotes that you will struggle to resist evil, but unless you see it subside, you will succumb to dangerous influences.

If you find yourself baling it out, but with feet growing wet, foreshadows trouble, sickness, and misery will work you a hard task, but you will forestall them by your watchfulness.

The same may be applied to muddy water rising in vessels.

To fall into muddy water, is a sign that you will make many bitter mistakes, and will suffer poignant grief therefrom.

To drink muddy water, portends sickness, but drinking it clear and refreshing brings favorable consummation of fair hopes.

To sport with water, denotes a sudden awakening to love and passion.

To have it sprayed on your head, denotes that your passionate awakening to love will meet reciprocal consummation.

The following dream and its allegorical occurrence in actual life is related by a young woman student of dreams: ``Without knowing how, I was (in my dream) on a boat, I waded through clear blue water to a wharfboat, which I found to be snow white, but rough and splintry.

The next evening I had a delightful male caller, but he remained beyond the time prescribed by mothers and I was severely censured for it.’’ The blue water and fairy white boat were the disappointing prospects in the symbol.

Water symbolizes life, feelings, fertility, and abundance. Thus, this type of dream plays an important role, though the meanings attributed to it vary. Water quality, therefore, reveals your emotional state.

If water is clear, your feelings are pure and you enjoy a blissfully peaceful period. But if it is muddy, you will suffer personal or health complications.

If there is water in the form of large ground-breaking waves, you might feel out control.

If it is a river, the flowing pace will express the calm or anguish of your emotions. Likewise, to see dirty and stagnant water reveals insincerity in your feelings.

Looking at water ensures safety from a danger. Bathing is a sign of innocence. To pour it: litigation. Walking on water represents triumph. To see a spring: improvement of a distressing situation. The water of a bathtub means happy old age.

WATER - analysis of the dream

Lucia dreamed: “I was sunbathing on a paradisiacal island of fine sand and crystalline waters. The sun was warming my body up while I was listening to the waves gently lapping. I felt really good, confident, and happy. Suddenly, I saw a huge wave coming, and before I could react, it invaded the whole beach. The sky turned black and a strong storm completely changed the landscape. At that point, there was no island, no sand, no firm land, and I was floating in the water frightened. I suddenly remembered that I did not know how to swim.”

When Lucia had this dream she had just begun an affair with a man; she had long been in love with him. The calm sea and the idyllic landscape reflected her confidence and initial joy. However, the water fiercely flooding the beach was warning her against the risk of drowning due to excessive enthusiasm. Any dream in which the water is stagnant is a warning sign indicating that we should give more freedom to our emotions. In Lucia’s case, the sea flowing freely—first in gentle waves and then stormy—is an indication that she was letting her feelings blossom.

By analogy of uterus and birth, dreams in which water appears may relate to feeling like getting ready for a new life or the desire to change old habits. The island represents Lucia’s individualism, her independent and safe live that was threatened by the arrival of romance and the overflowing torrent of emotions that it implied. A dream of having water sprayed on the head, or; being rained on, is a sign of a coming violent love affair.

Ability to adapt or accommodate (as water assumes the shape of its container).

Pervasiveness or ability to have far reaching effects (as water naturally flows and spreads into its surroundings).

Consider also the context and action of the water and how you felt about it.

Water that’s flowing or changing shape can represent change, transformation, or moving forward in your life (whether or not it’s under your control).

Changing tides: Among the Teutonic people, each tide carried different meanings that may apply to your dream.

The tide occurring just before sunup is one of introspection, while the one at dawn bears fertile waves. Noon tides speak of tenacity, dusk tides bring transformation, the night tide edifies, and the one occurring at midnight heals.

An ocean: The earth’s womb and beginnings of all humankind. Also representative of the vast subconscious, superconscious, or Jungian Collective Unconscious (see Abyss).

Among Native Americans, water appearing in dreams indicates your spiritual state.

For example, if the water is flowing smoothly, your spirit is calm and moving in a natural direction.

Moving water: Hie seen and unseen ebb and flow of all energies.

Baptism: New life, forgiveness toward yourself, and renewed purity’ of thought and actions (see Baby).

Bathing: Getting rid of your figurative “dirt” like old habits, guilt, anger, and even sexual repression (e.g., feeling “dirty”).

Hot water: Trouble s afoot, so look for the wellhead (see Temperature).

Drowning in water: Overwhelming circumstances, problems, or emotions that threaten to defeat your efforts or sense of individuality. Esoterically, this may also reflect a memory from a past life experience (see Choking, Suffocation).

Floating upon: Dependence on your feminine nature or a mother figure. Alternatively, skimming the surface of spiritual potentialities without ever really diving in and experiencing that aspect of self.

Stagnant water: Something, often a situation, that is unhealthy for you to the point where it causes a standstill in personal growth and in your quest for wholeness.

Shallow water represents a similarly frivolous personality that avoids delving into any aspect of life too deeply. Alternatively, this can represent a fear of confronting the depths of your own suhconscious.

Tidal waves: Powerful emotions or instincts that you have let build up to a critical mass. This dream reveals the need to express those things before they come crashing over the floodgates.

Surfing on water: Taking control of, and accepting the power in, the feminine aspects of self and the Universe. Also maintaining a rather haphazard balance between the intuitive nature (the water) and the conscious self (the surfer).

A geyser: A sudden, unanticipated outpouring of creativity, goodness, inspiration, spiritual gifts, or whatever.

Wearing a life preserver in the water represents getting a second chance at something. Grab it before it gets away!

Ripples appearing on the water’s surface indicate the waves of energy we send out without even knowing it, similar to a web. This will eventually touch everything and everyone because you are part of the network of life.

Lakes: As the abode of several magical creatures, including the Lady of the Lake and water nymphs, dream lakes reflect the search for the wonders that lie just beyond the surface of reality. What does the surface of the lake cover? Are you fishing here, thereby trying to catch a little magic?

The Word of God and the anointing are both depicted by Water in the Scriptures.

• Positive: Being washed with water speaks of being cleansed and of putting things behind you. It also speaks of being cleansed from your sin.

• Water is a picture of the anointing. John 4:14 Water is also a picture of the Word of God, and how it sets us free from the dirt in our lives.

• Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the [rhema] word, • To water something means to nurture it and to give it life.

If you are in ministry, then it means that you should be watering the seeds that have been planted in the hearts of God’s people.

• This is primarily a teaching function, just as Apollos functioned in.

• 1 Corinthians 3:61 have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Negative: Water that is bitter or dirty speaks of a contamination, likely stemming from bitterness.

• It speaks of those that really do have a ministry, but unfortunately are in deception. They have allowed some things in their life that are not of the Lord.

• To dream of being in unclean water speaks of the things you are getting involved in.

• Instead of walking in the spirit, by getting involved with these things or feeding on things that are not of God, you are contaminating your spirit.

• It could also indicate that the ministry you have been receiving is not pure and directly from the Lord. Some of it is tainted with the flesh and man’s ideas.

• When I train God’s leaders I share how the Lord takes them through training to get rid of their own ideas.

• The revelation and the anointing that God gives is pure when it comes from your spirit. However if your mind is filled with things of the world or your own ideas, you end up tainting that word. Then what comes out is only a part Christ, and the rest is your own ideas!
