For a woman to think a child places one on the back of her head, and she hears the snake’s hisses, foretells that she will be persuaded to yield up some possession seemingly for her good, but she will find out later that she has been inveigled into an intrigue in which enemies will tantalize her.

Snake / Serpent

See Poisonous Snake. More than anything else, this is a symbol of fear.

It is also often a sexual symbol, and a symbol of wholeness, transformation, and rebirth, as in Ouroboros.

A symbol of the dark feminine and deception, it also represents wisdom and cunning. Almost every woman dreams about serpents at least once in her life, which could mean fear of a rival or of the male gender.

The serpent stands for physical drives.

If something is not right in that area, snake dreams appear.

The image of the serpent may also refer to the “water of life,” since it comes from inside the earth where the healing springs originate.

The Caduceus, the staff of Aesculapius, a symbol of the healing arts, shows two serpents winding around it. In the sacred temple of Aesculapius, serpents crawled on the floor of the sleeping halls. They were said to induce healing dreams.

According to 2nd century dream interpreter Arte- midorus, dreaming about serpents indicates healing and the return to vitality.

It is also a symbol of immortality (shedding of the skin—rebirth).

The “Midgard-serpent” and the “Ferris wolf’ in Norse mythology threaten the gods as the world comes to an end.

The serpent is also the symbol for secret wisdom and the revelation of the hidden. Snakes are quick, attracted by fire and the birth of energy.

A snake steals from Gilgamesh (hero of the Sumerian epic) the herb of immortality, while he is taking a bath in a pond. In Greece, Gaia, the goddess of the earth, produces two half-serpents called Titans, who do battle with Zeus.

For the Gnostics of late antiquity, the serpent symbolized the dark, deep, and unfathomable side of God.

The serpent is also a symbol of Kundalini (the yogic life force). In ancient Greece, serpents were even honored publicly, because they were believed to be ghosts of the dead.

Snakes appear suddenly, out of the unknown, creating fear.

It is impossible to have a meaningful communication with them; they are secretive and fear-inducing, as is the unconscious. Their poison is sin, their wisdom transformation and deliverance. According to Early Christian imagination, when a snake was attacked, it would only protect its head.

According to Freud, a phallic symbol. According to Jung, the image of the snake means that something important is taking place in our unconscious; it may be dangerous or healing.

Reptiles, Lizards, Snakes

Our basic spinal and lower brain reactions, such as fight or flight, reproduction, attraction or repulsion, sex drive, need for food and reaction to pain. This includes the fundamental evolutionary ability to change and the urge to survive—very powerful and ancient processes. Our relationship with the reptile in our dreams depicts our relat- edness to such forces in us, and how we deal with the impulses from the ancient pan of our brain.

Modern humans face the difficulty of developing an independent identity and yet keeping a working relationship with the primitive, thus maturing/bringing the primitive into an efficiently functioning connection with the present social world.

The survival urge at base might be kill or run, but it can be transformed into the ambition which helps, say, an opera singer meet difficulties in her career. Also the very primitive has in itself the promise of the future, of new aspects of human consciousness. This is because many extraordinary human functions take place unconsciously, in the realm of the reptile/spine/lower brain/right brain/autonomic nervous system. Being unconscious they are less amenable to our waking will. They function fully only in some fight or flight, survive or die, situations.

If we begin to touch these with consciousness, as we do in dreams, new functions are added to consciousness.

See The dream as extended perception under ESP and dreams.

frog

Unconscious life or growth processes which can lead to transformation (the frog/prince story); the growth from childhood vulnerability—tadpole to frog—therefore the process of life in general and its wisdom. Frogspawn: sperm, ovum and reproduction.

lizard

Example: ‘My wife and I saw a large lizard on the wall near a banana. It was there to catch the flies.

The lizard turned so it was facing away from us—head up the wall. We then were able to see it had large wing-like flaps which spread from its head in an invened V. With amazement we saw on these flaps wonderful pictures, in full colour, of birds. In fleeting thoughts I wondered if the bird “paintings” were to attract birds, or were some form of camouflage. But I felt cenain the lizard had “painted” these wonderful pictures with its unconscious an’ (David T). Generally, a lizard is very much the same as a snake, except it lacks the poisonous aspect; awareness of unconscious or instinctive drives, functions and processes. In the above dream, the banana is both David’s pleasure and sexuality, while the lizard is the creativity emerging from his unconscious through the attention he is giving it—he is looking at the lizard. Chameleon: either one’s desire to fade into the background, or adaptability.

snake

Example: A small snake about a foot long had dropped down my shirt neck. I could feel it on the left side of my neck Fearing it was poisonous and might bite me, I moved very slowly. At one point I put my head on the ground, hoping the snake would wish to crawl away. It did not. Then I was near an elephant I loved, and hoped it would remove the snake. It did not. Even as I slept I felt the snake was an expression of the attitude of not shanng myself with anybody except family’ (David T).

For months prior to the above dream David had experienced a great deal of neck pain. After discussing the dream with his wife, and realising much of his thinking and feeling was intumed, the pain disappeared. So the snake was both poisoner’ and ‘healer’. This may be why snakes are used as a symbol of the medical profession.

The Hebrew word for the serpent in the Garden of Eden is Nahash, which can be translated as blind impulsive urges, such as our instinctive drives.

So, generally, snakes depict many different things, but usually the life process.

If we think of a person’s life from conception to death, we see a flowing moving event, similar in many ways to the speeded up films of a seed growing into a plant, flowering and dying.

The snake depicts the force or energy behind that movement and purposiveness—the force of life which leads us both to growth and death. That energy —like electricity in a house, which can be heat, power, sound and vision—lies behind all our functions. So in some dreams the snake expresses our sexuality, in others the rising of that energy up our body to express itself as digestion—the intestinal snake; as the healing or poisonous energy of our emotions and thoughts.

Example: ‘I was in a huge cathedral, the mother church. I wanted to go to the toilet/gents. As I held my penis to urinate it became a snake and reached down to the urinal to drink. It was thirsty. I struggled with it, pulling it away from the unclean liquid. Still holding it I walked to a basin and gave it pure water to drink’ (Bill A). Here the connection between snake and sexuality is obvious. But the snake is not just Bill’s penis.

It is the direction his sexual urges take him he is struggling with. Out of his sense of love and connection with life— the cathedral—he wants to lift his drive towards something which will not leave him with a sense of uncleanness. Snake in connection with any hole: sexual relatedness.

A snake biting us: unconscious worries about our health, frustrated sexual impulse, our emotions turned against ourselves as internalised aggression, can poison us and cause very real illness, so may be shown as the biting snake. Snake biting others: biting remarks, a poisonous tongue.

A crowned or light-encircled snake: when our ‘blind impulses’ or instinctive or unconscious urges and functions are in some measure integrated with our conscious will and insight, this is seen as the crowned snake or even winged snake. It shows real self awareness and maturity. In coils of snake: feeling bound in the ‘blind impulses’ or habitual drives and feeling responses. Instincts and habits can be redirected, as illustrated by Hercules’ labours. Snake with tail in mouth: sense of the circle of life—binh, growth, reproduction, aging, death, rebirth; the eternal. Snake coiling up tree, pole, cross: the blind instinctive forces of life emerging into conscious experience—in other words the essence of human expenence with its involvement in pain, pleasure, time and eternity; the process of personal growth or evolution; healing because personal growth often moves us beyond old attitudes or situations which led to inner tension or even sickness. Snake in grass: sense or intuition of talk behind your back; danger, sneakiness. Colours: green, our internal life process directed, perhaps through satisfied feelings, love and creativity, into a healing process or one which leads to our personal growth and positive change; white, eternal aspect of our life process, or becoming conscious of it; blue, religious feelings or coldness in relations.

See colours; anxiety dreams; death and rebirth, the self under archetypes; dreams and Ancient Greece; cellar under house, buildings; hypnosis and dreams; jungle; paralysis. ... reptiles, lizards, snakes dream meaning

Vision: Sitting or swinging on a swing: you are too easily influenced by others, have a hard time making decisions and, generally speaking, may be fickle and sometimes downright unreliable. Looking at a swing: it is time to look at your inconsistency. Rocking on a rocking horse: you are frittering away your time; also, what you call love is really infatuation.

Depth Psychology: A swing means your moods are constantly “swinging back and forth.” In a man’s dream, it also might imply that—if married and having an affair—he can’t decide between his wife and his lover.

The dream is a warning: make a decision now and be more assertive.... swing, rocking horse dream meaning

Laying Down

The dreams in which you lay down in bed indicate a period of uncertainty or waiting regarding problems that you do not feel able to cope with without help.

If you are lying down outdoors, something that is causing you suffering is nothing more than a passing concern, not as serious as you originally thought.

If you are sharing your bed with a person of the same sex, in addition to the aforementioned uncertainty, this reflects a concern about what others might think of you. Conversely, if it is a person of the opposite sex, chances are the problems will be solved soon.... laying down dream meaning

White Animals

There is a rich history in many aboriginal cultures that is still part of the collective consciousness around the purity of the color white in the realm of animal totems. Most commonly associated with the buffalo, the wolf, and large cats, the elevation of an animal’s power is what is being expressed when that animal appears as white. In the color spectrum, white is perceived when all the vibrations of light are combined, so the symbolic meaning of white relates to complete integration and wholeness.

Black And White Dreams

To dream in black and white suggests that you need to be more objective in formulating your decisions. You may be a little too unyielding in your thought processes, and thus need to find some sort of balance between two opposing views. Consider the views and opinions of others. Alternatively, black and white dreams may be a sign of depression or sadness. You may feel that there is not enough excitement in your life.

It is a quite commonly held belief that we only dream in black and white, but many people are able to identify tones of color in their dreams.

If this is the case, why is it believed that we only dream in black and white? It may be because dreams that appear to be black and white only appear so because the color is not relevant. This doesn’t necessarily mean, however, that such dreams are in black and white. Black and white is a function of television when the color information is removed, but the same is not true of the mind. For example, grass might not be green in a dream, but it’s not gray as it is in a black and white movie; the color simply is not relevant and your unconscious isn’t highlighting it. This non-relevance fools the conscious mind on waking up into concluding that, by implication, the dream must have been in black and white.

A black funeral may suggest difficulties in, or the need for a new approach to, a relationship or work issue, as the current approach is doomed. Or are you grieving for a phase or aspect of your life that has recently come to an end? As stated above, black often represents the death of new ideas, so could your dream be telling you to prepare for the transition? Black animals that appear in dreams are usually associated with notions of temptation, unconscious drives and urges, whilst black clothes and underwear are a symbol of hidden or unconscious feelings, or sexuality. A night dream scene shrouded in darkness may relate to a certain lack of direction in your waking life. According to traditional symbolism, black is also associated with wickedness, so if you are menaced by a person wearing black in your dream, could the dream be a depiction of your darkest fears. Do you worry that someone is a threat to you or are you your own worst enemy?

Snake Colors

Snakes of different colors
A black or dark colored snake may indicate that there is something ominous going on—or about to happen—in your life, as well as hint at potential problems with past relationships. On the other hand, a yellow or orange snake can indicate happiness and joy, while a bright red one is a sign of intense passion and energy.

Green in dream meaning:
Green is a sign of safety. It means move ahead without fear or worry. Consider this a kind of “green light” for decision-making purposes.

Black in dream meaning:
Black is a sign of evil. If you see a black snake in your dream, it could speak to something dangerous or bad.

Also any dreams of black snakes do not predict anything good. In this case, the snake symbolizes the obstacle you are facing or will face. If you dream of a black snake, it is better to avoid any arguments, disputes and not to sign suspicious contracts.

Avoid anything that could endanger you.

Red in dream meaning:
Red means stop. Should you see a red snake, it could be your mind’s way of urging you to abandon what you are doing and rethink your approach.

Yellow in dream meaning:
Yellow is a sign of caution. This could be your unconscious trying to tell you to proceed carefully.

Light-colored/yellow snake in a dream
There’s something you really want, but you’re not going after it because you’re afraid of the unknown or something new you’re not used to. Because of such fear, you may lose a good job offer or something else that would be very beneficial for your life.

Blue in dream meaning:
Blue is a sign of conflict. Whenever you see a blue snake it dreams, think of this as representative of something you are internally confused about.

Brown in dream meaning:
Brown is a sign of health: Should you see a brown snake in your dream, its presence may speak to health concerns.

Purple in dream meaning:
Purple means passion. Rarely, some people dream about purple colored snakes. Almost always, they represent love and passion.

Orange in dream meaning:
Orange means family. Sometimes, a snake will appear with an orangish color. Almost always, this is symbolic of someone close, like a parent, child or sibling.

White in dream meaning:
White means purity and innocence. If you dream about a white snake, it could speak to some aspect of yourself that is vulnerable.

A white snake in a dream
If you saw a white snake on the floor or another solid surface, it means that you have a clear mind, you finally know what it is that you want to achieve and what steps you need to take. You may also feel that you are finally standing “firmly on the ground”.

If you saw a white snake in the water, it means regeneration and purification of your soul. It can also predict good health or pure intentions.... snake colors dream meaning

Snake / Snakes

If the snake bit you
In this case, the snake likely has less to do with others in your life, and more to do with you specifically, your health.

The meaning of a snake bite in a dream can be counterintuitive: “The bite is similar to a shot being administered,” Loewenberg says. “So if a snake bites you in a dream, ask yourself if there are any health issues that are beginning to get better or an emotional wound that seems to be healing.” Or, “the snake bite could signify that you are the victim of someone’s critical or ‘biting’ remarks.”

A venomous snake
Dreaming of poisonous snakes heralds the advent of bad events. The snake bites can be seen as “poisoning” your life. Furthermore, the snake reflects bad and deceptive behavior, or even difficult life events (problems).

It can either mean that your thoughts are toxic and poisonous, or you keep surrounding yourself by something that is poisoning your life (bad people, addictive substances, junk food, doubts or worries).

Being strangled by a snake in a dream
You are about to say something that you might regret later. This dream wants to protect you from doing so. In other words – think twice, speak once.

Being chased by a snake
The snake that chases you expresses a sense of internal danger. There are many possible causes – from the fear of maternity to the fear of success at work. The dream is a mirror of reality, so you should understand it as a challenge to understand everything that is still unconscious.

If you do not recognize a particular person in the snake that is chasing you, start thinking about what is bothering you in general. Think about what stresses you out the most, because these are probably unnecessary worries that make your life more difficult.

A snake that ignores you in a dream
You’re afraid of losing something valuable. There will probably be no loss, but the fear of it greatly limits and stresses you out. You may be afraid of losing valuable things, a car or a house due to distraints, but in fact, you will not lose anything.

Fear of being bitten by a snake in a dream
You are unnecessarily putting yourself in a challenging situation where you are losing or don’t have full control over your life because you are weakened and are thus a simple target for people with bad intentions. That can be frightening; often this indicates a fear that someone in your life is going to cause you harm. Evaluate your relationships and consider which ones are toxic. If there’s someone who might hurt or betray you, it’s time to come to terms with it. On the other hand, a snake bite could also mean something in your life is about to change dramatically, but for the better.

Seeing a dead snake in a dream
A dead snake in a dream can often indicate that you have overcome an obstacle that made your life difficult. It can also predict the end of a difficult situation, or liberation from toxic or self-destructive thoughts.

Seeing a large number of snakes
If you’re seeing a large number of snakes in your dream or are surrounded by snakes, you may be in a life stage where you feel as if it is too much for you or as if you had a heavy load on your shoulders. Your life journey can be full of pitfalls, obstacles, and dangers, and you don’t know how to escape it.

If you dreamed of a boa constrictor
According to Loewenberg, nothing in a dream is ever random, meaning that the species of snake that appears in your dream is significant. (And remember, snakes tend to represent people in your life.) Think about the snake closely — and in particular, consider the way it threatens its prey or predators.

“A boa constrictor is known for squeezing its prey to death,” Lowenberg says. “So a boa constrictor in your dream may be connected to someone in your life who is causing you to feel crowded or constricted, or someone who may be squeezing you financially.”

If you dreamed of a rattlesnake
When a predator or even unaware passerby gets close to a rattlesnake, the venomous serpent will rattle its tail to warn the perceived threat away. Therefore, if a rattlesnake appears in your dream, it may be “warning you about a toxic person in your life or telling you to start paying attention to warning signs a certain person may be displaying.”

If you dreamed of a harmless species, like a garter snake
In this case, you may be able to breathe a sigh of relief. “A garter snake is harmless, so it may represent someone you were originally cautious about but are now realizing is not a threat to you,” Loewenberg says.

If multiple snakes appeared in your dream
Just like the breed of snake, the number of snakes that appear in your dream can hold meaning. “Multiple snakes can represent multiple toxic people or a toxic situation that has many facets to it,” Loewenberg says. Alternatively, “multiple snakes could represent multiple health issues or one health issue that has many elements to it.”

If you dreamed the snake was in your house
If you come across a snake in your house, well, look for potentially toxic people — or stressors — under your roof. (Sorry!) Or, think of it more figuratively. Perhaps, Loewenberg suggests, the menacing individual’s “toxicity is to the point that you are bringing that negativity home with you.”

If you dream the snake was outside
Conversely, if the snake in your dream is outside, Loewenberg says it “can be a message that it’s time to get things ‘out in the open’ with this toxic person.” She adds: “Toxic people continue to poison our lives because we don’t speak up about it.”

If the snake bit a loved one
If a snake attacks a loved one in a dream, then that person could be the one dealing with a health or emotional issue. Or, if you don’t believe the snake has anything to do with health, Loewenberg suggests looking internally and asking yourself if you might be the snake. Ask yourself, “have you been spewing venomous words at this person?”

If the snake bit an enemy
In this scenario, you might be the snake. “To dream someone you dislike gets bitten by snake could reflect your desire to take them down with your own ‘biting’ remarks and ‘wounding’ words,” Loewenberg says.

If a snake appeared in a sensual dream
Snakes can also symbolize male sexual energy — vis-à-vis “their shape,” Loewenberg says. So, if you find yourself sexually interested in a man, snakes may begin to appear in your dreams in a non-threatening manner.

A snake which is shedding its skin
Is indicating transformation and change. Ask yourself how you felt when you dreamed this: were you afraid, excited, or accepting? Is there some sort of upcoming change that you fear? Is your life in a transitory phase? Perhaps the snake is chasing you. That can be pretty terrifying; it may mean you’re avoiding dealing with an unpleasant situation. ... snake / snakes dream meaning

Right Side

The right-hand side (or something appearing on the right or coming from the right) can represent perceived or imagined: Giving or pushing.

Logic or rationale.

Masculinity.

Rigidity.

Conservative political views (as in “the right”).

Positivity.

Something else you personally associate with the right side.

Also consider the context and meaning of whatever’s on the right side.

Doing something right-handed when you’re actually left-handed can represent challenging yourself (perhaps unnecessarily); trying something new or in a new way; looking at something from a different perspective.
