Fire Dream Meaning: From 39 Different Sources

(1) Fire may symbolize libido, passion. Poking a fire may therefore mean arousing passion, and may be a symbol of the sexual act.

(2) It may symbolize a fever, and the dream may actually have been caused by a feverish bodily condition.

(3) If the fire is destroying or threatening to destroy a house, the house will almost certainly represent yourself (or, in the case of (2) above, your body). The dream will usually mean there is some (repressed) emotion that is liable to burst out destructively if it is not given your conscious attention. The same would apply if the fire was a conflagration - for example, a forest fire - threatening you.

(4) Fire - which can change liquids and even some minerals into air - may symbolize purification and transformation. (The Hindu custom of burning the dead is a symbolic purging.) If, therefore, what is being burned in the dream can be seen as a symbol of yourself, the message will be about getting rid of whatever has been blocking the way to a fiiller realization of your true self.

What we think we are is usually all those habitual responses that have been conditioned by past events and experiences. What we really are is eternal - that is, not conditioned by the past. So, to find our true self we have to ‘bum5 the past. Fire, like floods, is a fertilizer, making new things possible by destroying the old.

(5) In some contexts fire may be equivalent to light and may symbolize spirituality, truth, (self-)knowledge. (This is the opposite of hell-fire, which has been described as burning without giving any light. For the fires of purgatory see (4) above.)

Passion; sexuality, anger, desire; burning feelings such as resentment or frustration; our desire to destroy. Also our life process, often described as a flame which burns forever through different generations but leaves only ash behind, our vital energy; occasionally refers to physical illness.

Suddenly it caught fire, I wanted to stay and put the fire out but she did not. She dragged me outside and down the street. We saw the house burn down. Also the loss of an area or era of life. Underground flames: unconscious emotions or desires which one may need to face for real growth. Things are changing in a dramatic way.

The combustion of fire destroys everything in its path. However, remember that fire reduces what it burns to carbon, the building block of all life. So while the destruction of fire is absolute, like all change, it is making way for something else to be created.

A small fire or spark may indicate that winds of change are approaching, whereas something raging out of control could be pointing to change and transformation that feels overwhelming and scary. Consider what is burning in the dream, and that will shed light on what a dream that features fire is reflecting. What is burning is likely the most important focus of your investigation.

If it is something you are familiar with, it may indicate that a major transformation is occurring in your life in the arena represented by that thing.

A house on fire connects to a transformation in your personal identity.

A building that is more public relates more to your social identity. An object that you possess could be explored and the meaning you associate with it combined with the idea of radical change in that area.

A fire in nature might point to a loss of resources, nurturing, or creativity.

If someone dies in a fire, that person’s character aspect will inform you of what part of yourself is being sacrificed in order for a new sense of self to emerge.

The size of the fire and your emotional response to it will illuminate issues of overwhelm and loss of control.

A large fire that is out of control could indicate broad-based changes that may be resulting in the total dissolution of the old landscape of your life.

A contained fire could indicate that the change may be manageable and possibly even intentional.

A campfire in the outdoors could represent your ability to create powerful change out of limited resources.

A fireplace or wood-burning stove relates to harnessing change for your benefit or pleasure. While fire is dangerous and violent, it has the power to purify and create the possibility of renewal and new growth. When it appears in a dream, be aware that great change is afoot and that the future is likely to bring new life and new possibility.

The dreamer needs to prepare herself for an increased level of stress and activity.

If the dreamer is burned, trouble lies ahead. Look to other symbols in the dream as to how to prepare for it and resolve it.

If the dreamer avoids being burned, a sticky situation will be quickly resolved.

A roaring bonfire or a welcome blaze in a fireplace signifies good news, security, a period of hope after a stint of difficulties. Astrological parallel: Aries, Mars

Being aware of the heat of a fire is to be aware of someone else’s strong feelings. Baptism by fire signifies a new awareness and awakening of spiritual power and transformation created sometimes through extremes of emotion. Fire is a valid western symbol of the spiritual energy known as kundalini, which rises from the base of the spine to the crown of the head and brings with it a shift in perception.

A fire bucket, as with any hollow vessel, can represent the feminine principle.

Psychological / emotional perspective: Psychologically, fire often appears in dreams as a symbol of cleansing and purification. We can use the life-giving and generative power to change our lives. Sometimes fire indicates the need to use our sexual power to good effect.

To dream of being burnt alive may express our fears of a new relationship or phase of life. We may also be conscious that we could suffer for our beliefs. As a symbol, the fire bucket indicates that we may have a situation around us that is out of control.

The interpretation will depend on whether the bucket is full or empty for it is often only by a display of ‘dampening’ emotion that there can be any progress.

Material aspects: Fire in a dream can suggest passion and desire in its more positive sense, and frustration, anger, resentment and destructiveness in its more negative. It will depend on whether the fire is controlled or otherwise on the exact interpretation.

To be more conscious of the flame of the fire would be to be aware of the energy and strength that is available to us.

A fire basket draws our attention to the fact that these energies can be contained; whereas a fire bucket, particularly if it is filled with sand, suggests such energies should be smothered.

Universal Landscape: Powerful transformation that is rapid and complete.

Dreaming Lens: Were you witnessing a fire? Were you starting a fire, or attempting to put one out? Was the fire manageable and pleasant, or raging out of control? Were you burning, or in danger of being burned? Were you present for the fire, or just the aftermath? What color was the flame? What was being burned?

Personal Focus: Fire is the combustion of some material undergoing a radical increase in temperature that results in a rapid restructuring of its molecular structure. If the material that is burning is organic in nature, the residual compound that remains is carbon, the basic foundation for all life on our planet. This is what makes fire such a powerful symbol for transformation and change. That which has been burned is transmuted back into the substance that is the underlying material from which anything can be created anew.

There can be many different colors present with fire and these can be explored in your interpretation process. Red flames can represent passion, frustration, or aggression, as well as issues of security. Orange connects to sexuality; yellow to emotions; green to healing; and blue to communication issues. Indigo relates to instincts and intuition and violet means that spirituality is the focus of the shift. (See Colors for more on this.)

FIRE - analysis of the dream

Laura dreamed: “I was on my bed surrounded by flames. The fire was all over my bedroom devastating everything, burning all of my belongings... but I was not able to move, I was paralyzed by fear. Suddenly, I noticed that the fire was not hurting me, the flames caressed my skin without burning me. That made me smile and I thought: ‘My skin is like an asbestos suit. I am fireproof.’ I left my bedroom by walking through the flames, whistling, convinced of being endowed with a magical power against fire.”

Dreaming of fire may indicate that your reserves of both energy and enthusiasm are in crisis. You might be facing a situation that puts you to the test in real life.

If the dream’s fire is well received, it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your difficulties. When Laura had this dream she was going through a difficult domestic situation: her daughter had just been born, she had to take care of her mother who had a broken femur, and she was about to get seriously depressed. Fire was encouraging her to be more optimistic and energetic. The uncontrollable fire was telling Laura to act with precaution and a more relaxed attitude.

A dream in which you end up being safe and sound after an encounter with fire, like the phoenix, indicates growth in the face of difficulties. The unconscious was trying to calm Laura by reminding her of her courage and ability to overcome life’s setbacks. She managed to get her mother—who was in wheelchair—to help with the baby’s care. This new responsibility made Laura’s mother feel useful, despite her injury, forgetting her incipient depression.

Dreaming of fire indicates that your enthusiasm and energy reserves are in crisis. Maybe in real life you are facing a situation that puts you to the test; if the fire warms you and is well received, maybe it is encouraging you to be more optimistic about your problems. The presence of fire in dreams may well be an incentive to continue along the path taken.

If you are lighting a fire it may be an indication that you must begin a project. To move in flames without burning denotes strength and ability to overcome obstacles, a burning desire to reach the goal. Finally, if you dream that a forest or a house burns down your situation is reaching a dangerous limit. (See FIREPLACE, BURNS, RED, and BLOWING) Jung said that fire represents the process of psychological change. Alchemists used fire to transform the simple metal into gold, so it is a symbol of inner transformation. This element can purge corruption from the past, provide light, and reveal spiritual truth.

It is the eternal flame in the temple of the soul.

In dreams, fire reflects your feelings of love and hate, the forces of creation and destruction. Thus, a small well lit fire indicates desire for a lasting love or friendship. In addition, it predicts success, health, and happiness. A fire that produces too much smoke, however, announces betrayals and conflicts.

If the flames are threatening you, it represents fear of facing a problem or project; if it swelters you are wasting or misusing your energy and efforts.

This dream is a fortunate one provided the dreamer does not get burned.

A happy family life is portended to those who dream that their homes are burning.

Building a fire out of doors, or in a stove or furnace is a sign of coming prosperity.

The portent of this dream varies greatly according to its details and action, so all aspects should be carefully correlated, but as a general guide:

A fire is an omen of impending trouble if it burned you; good news if it didn’t.

To observe a house or building that is on fire forecasts an urgent appeal for help from a close friend or relative.

You can expect an exciting romantic adventure if you built a fire or stirred one with a poker.

A small cheerful fire in a fireplace indicates contentment.

A dream of setting fire to a house, building, or anything of value is telling you to control your temper or be prepared for serious consequences.

A roaring big fire (contained in a grate) signifies new hope after a time of discouragement

Fire can represent: Life or your “internal light.” Light (as in illumination or awareness).

The elements often have important roles in disaster dreams. In a dream, fire can be a purifying influence, it can relate to anger, or it might be suggestive of destruction. It may also relate to the fact that you are being consumed by a passion in waking life. In any event, its appearance in your dream may suggest that something in your life (most likely related to work or home) is in the midst of considerable change. Such a dream may be a warning—especially if you are trying unsuccessfully to smother the flames. The dream would be reassuring if a house or room was catching fire and you could control the flames, for here is a symbol of controlled passion. The dream is reassuring you that you are, or can be, in control of your life.

Disaster dreams in which you see people engulfed in a burning building should make you consider both your reaction and your personal connection with the disaster—if any.

If you are merely a spectator in the dream, too scared to move or offer your help, you should ask yourself whether you are equally fearful of life, or whether you are less forceful than you need to be.

If any of your friends, colleagues or family members are trapped in the building and you know you should help them, your dream may be telling you to take a more active part in their lives.

If you dreamed that you were in the burning building or that the building was falling down around you, consider whether your life is also collapsing around you. To dream of being burned alive may express your fears of a new relationship or phase of life. Finally if you are fire-fighting in your dream, this is a positive sign as it shows you are putting up a fight in real life.

The Element Of Fire

Fire is often considered the most fearsome and powerful of the four elements because it not only devours, causing pain and destruction, it also purifies, cleanses and illuminates.

In dreams, fire is a potent symbol of the passion of strong emotion and burning love, as well as of new beginnings. It has many different and conflicting meanings, and interpretation is sometimes difficult. Standing in, or being in, flames can therefore suggest the burning out of old attitudes or experiences to make way for the new; but such a dream could also represent your fears of a new phase in life, your own personal suffering for your beliefs, or that you are consumed by destructive emotions, such as passion or envy. Sometimes interpretation is easier; for example, if a house is burning down or there is a forest fire, this suggests you are consumed by passion. The exact interpretation will depend on whether the fire is being controlled or not.

If fire figures in your dream, consider whether your emotions have got out of control. Are you being a hot head? Is your passion burning?

A controlled dream fire can also symbolize security. The fireplace or hearth is the heart of the home and the center of warmth, and to dream of it may show that you feel comfortable with yourself. Freud said that fire was a symbol of the libido and passion, and to dream of poking a fire represented sexual arousal. Jung, on the other hand, said that fire suggested intuition and psychological transformation. Just as the alchemists used fire to transform base metal into gold, so fire is a symbol for personal growth. It destroys the past but lights the way for the future. It is the eternal flame in the temple of the soul and from the fire the phoenix of hope arises. Baptism by fire signifies a new awareness of spiritual power and transformation. Sometimes fire can be a warning of illness. It is also associated with the astrological signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius.

If a fire is put out by water, this suggests physical energy being restrained by the cooler processes of thought.... the element of fire dream meaning

Firework / Explosion / Inferno

If you watched a fantastic firework display in your dream, are you feeling particularly good about yourself right now? Has there been a personal triumph? Or should you interpret the dream sexually, as fireworks are symbols of sexual climax in the movies. On the other hand, fireworks may denote explosions of furious rage and any dream explosion may reflect pent-up fury or frustration that is building up in waking life. Is there something in waking life that is making you tense and angry? Dreams in which you watch helplessly as a raging inferno destroys your home may be warnings from your unconscious to fit a smoke alarm in your home or office, but they may also have highlighted your current overheated emotional stage. It is important to ask yourself who or what is provoking your rage and whether the full force of your anger is about to be unleashed in waking life. And what would the results of the explosion be— devastation that all you have worked for has gone up in smoke, or liberation that you have burned your bridges and can arise energized from the ashes?

To dream of a fireman represents selfcontrol and your ability to deal with your energies, burning desires or emotional emergencies in the waking world. To dream that you caused a fire may be a warning from your unconscious that you are playing with fire and may be in danger of getting your fingers burned if you go ahead with a certain project or get involved with a certain person.

If you find yourself on fire, your passions may be consuming you and you may feel hopeless and trapped in waking life. If, however, you managed to put a fire out, this shows that you are asserting control over the fire raging within you.

If someone else started a fire, your unconscious may have been telling you to watch that person carefully in waking life or to carry out some simple safety checks.... firework / explosion / inferno dream meaning

Lighting A Fire

If you dreamed of lighting a fire, what sort of fire was it and who else was there? Kindling a fire represents a summoning of energy, so the context of the fire in your dream should always be taken into consideration. Where are you focusing your energy? If the fire spreads out of control in your dream, this may indicate that your emotions are in danger of running out of control too.

If you succeed in controlling the blaze, this suggests you are in control of your waking life. Also pay attention to what was being burned in your dream and what the fire was feeding on, as the other symbols in the dream may help with your interpretation. For example, if you were burning your clothes, is it time to brighten up your image?

A fire burning in a domestic hearth is likely to point to your private life, whilst a bonfire or beacon has more public significance as a symbol of communication. Lighting a stove to cook a meal for family and friends suggests concern for your loved ones, and lighting a candle for a meal or curling up in front of a log cabin’s roaring fire may suggest sexual heat.... lighting a fire dream meaning

Tending A Fire

In dreams in which you are tending a fire, try to remember how much attention it needed from you; did it burn vigorously or did you have to fan it, stoke and feed it fuel to keep it alight? If you had to keep it alight, perhaps some passion or desire in your waking life is flickering or waning, and you need to take action to energize it; or have the demands of your working life forced you to neglect your real passions, be they people or interests. Remember lighting fire dreams represent the birth of creative energy, so how you tend and control the fire is significant.

If you are conscious of the flame of the fire, this suggests an awareness of your own strength and energy.

If you are aware of the heat of the fire, you are aware of someone else’s strong feelings.... tending a fire dream meaning
